(Along with T.E.Lawrence Seven Pillars, and the five-volume history of WWI.) The Eugene Sledge memoir is good.<br /><br />Just finished the second McManus book on the US Army in the Pacific "Island Infernos". I like the depiction of tensions and conflict among the US commanders, and how the mode of combat reflected the two societies--US versus Japan.
